Eastern Canada walloped by snow, winds

Storm spreads its reaches from Ontario into Maritimes

BY HELEN MORRIS

The storm that has buried Ottawa is wreaking havoc across much of Eastern North America with severe weather warnings stretching east through Quebec to the Maritimes and into the United States.

The storm — the ninth major storm of the season — came up from Virginia, and was expected to dump up to 50 centimetres of snow in eastern Ontario and the St. Lawrence valley.

Toronto was a grey mess yesterday as winds whipped snow around, leaving streets blanketed. There was a brief reprieve after 10 centimetres of snow fell overnight Friday, but by mid-morning the storm was back in full force.

The heaviest snow was expected to wrap up by midnight yesterday, leaving Toronto just 10 centimetres shy of the seasonal record snowfall for the city.

The city has recorded more than 176 centimetres of snow this winter and could reach close to 200 centimetres before the storm passes, Environment Canada said. The record is 207 centimetres, set in 1938-39.

Residents of Quebec were bracing for fierce northeasterlies winds of up to 100 kilometres last night, according to Environment Canada. Montreal was expecting about 30 centimetres of snow.

New Brunswick had a mixed bag of weather warnings: winter storm in some areas, freezing rain and rainfall warnings issued for other parts of the province beginning yesterday evening. Fredericton was expected to get anywhere from 60 to 100 millimetres of rain. Environment Canada also issued a heavy rainfall warning for most of Nova Scotia, with freezing rain expected in Cape Breton. Freezing rain was also forecasted for Prince Edward Island.

In the U.S., the storm slammed into the Ohio Valley yesterday, forcing flight delays and cancellations at airports. Snow totals from Ohio to western New York are predicted to exceed 40 to 50 centimetres by today. Ahead of the snow, freezing rain, ice and sleet fell from eastern Kentucky into New York state.

Meanwhile, severe weather ranging from tornadoes to damaging wind gusts were reported across northern Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina Friday and yesterday.

Rain lashed the eastern Mid-Atlantic region and moved into southern New England. A total of four traffic deaths in Ohio, Tennessee and New York state were also blamed on the weather.
