片名来自《圣经》中的《启示录》——“羔羊揭开第七印的时候，天上寂静约有二刻。”影片中极具象征意义的意象俯拾皆是，无论是死亡的造型，还是盘旋空中的黑鹰，均有着耐人寻味的涵义。这些形象已成为电影语汇的基石，被后人反复模仿。不过，对宗教不感兴趣的观众会觉得本片很难欣赏，因为太过沉重。

◎简 介
影片透过十四世纪战争结束之后理想主义的骑士布罗克以及他的同伴在蔓延瘟疫的欧洲大陆上的漂泊生涯，向观众展示了不同的人在面对死亡时不同的表现方式。同时对人类生存的意义、对信仰的根源以及上帝的存在性提出了针锋相对的疑问，同时又通过演员约瑟夫一家的生活来肯定信仰本身的力量。
故事发生在中世纪，一名十字军骑士带着侍从东征返回，在途中他遇到了死神的化身。当时正值欧洲大瘟疫肆虐，他拖着疲惫不堪的身子，内心充满了需要时间才能解开的疑问：生命的意义何在？死的本质是什么？他决定和死神赌一盘棋，如果他输了就让死神带走。棋局断断续续地下着。骑士也着继续自己的旅程。在途中的所见所闻让他渐渐明白真理就是人世间的幸福，拯救他们的不是靠上天的法力，而是人类孕育生命，相亲相爱。然而此时，死神追上了他，要求和他把未下完的棋下完。结果是骑士输掉了。第二天，流浪者似乎看见死神把骑士带走，拖进了一个“骷髅舞”的圆阵中。
