There's no letting up in the opening of new Japanese restaurants in Singapore despite the radiation scare.

The latest to arrive on our shores is Fisherman's Market, a buffeteria which has two outlets in Japan - Kobe and Yokohama.

Facing the Singapore River at Clarke Quay, the two-storey eatery at The Central in Eu Tong Sen Street), boasts a spread of over 90 food dishes.
 
At a tasting, we found that the highlight was the seafood, which comes from South Asia, Australia, North America and elsewhere in the world.

We liked the freshly shucked NZ oysters best, followed by the sashimi and sushi.

They were budget-restaurant quality, so don't have high expectations just because the restaurant is from Japan.

Overall, the food was the run-of-the-mill, standard buffet stuff that should excite teenagers, families and dining groups looking for good food deals and not quality.

There were very few items that I really liked.

The crispy fried Saba fish was oily and flavourful. The fish curry was creamy and nicely pungent with curry leaves.

And the rich creme brulee was a dessert dream.

Some dishes fell flat.

Like the tasteless chocolate fondue robbed of cocoa. And the dried-out glazed pork ribs, which looked more like expired junk food.

To me, the only real foods there were the oyster, sushi and salads.

But if you were to gorge on the oysters, sashimi and sushi, you would get your money's worth.
