Former President George W. Bush does a good thing Former President George W. Bush has decided to spend his post-presidency years working for a good cause. Too bad he couldn’t work for the good of womankind while he was President of the United States, but better late than never? He’s forming a partnership with the George W. Bush Institute, the State Department and other entities to use the infrastructure of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief to provide cervical and breast cancer screening and treatment in the developing world. The goal of the project is to reduce the number of cervical cancer deaths by 25% in five years time. Bush’s Institute will give $75 million as an initial investment and the thinking is that by targeting other serious diseases, the AIDS epidemic in these countries can also be thwarted. The partnership will work with the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief to train their workers to teach women to perform breast self exams especially where mammograms are not widely available. |
