Report: Chrysler’s 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 actually comes from Maserati

Chrysler and Maserati have an interesting past–for those of you who might recall, the Chrysler LeBaron and the badge’ineered Chrysler-Maserati TC. Though, that was quite some time ago and ironically, after those awkward years, Chrysler and Maserati are tied up again under the umbrella of Fiat S.p.A., alongside Ferrari, Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia.

That said, Chrysler’s new use of a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6, mainly in the new Ram 1500 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee, also comes thanks to Maserati as the engine has roots from the Italian automaker. According to Ward’s Automotive 2014 10 Best Engines, the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 is produced by Fiat’s subsidiary, VM Motori, which also happens to be neighbors with Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Pagani, and Ducati in the city of Cento, Italy. Ward’s noted the engine’s refinement, fuel economy, and power as the same engine serves duty in the diesel versions of the Maserati Quattroporte and the Ghibli. Though they obviously are tuned to a different degree.

The Maserati Quattroporte’s diesel is good for 275hp and 442 lb-ft of twist while the Ram 1500 gets a 240hp and 420 lb-ft of twist variant.

So if you’re a current or prospective owner of the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel or the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel, and someone asks if “it gotta’ HEMI,” you could just reply with the much better response: “Nope, she gotta’ Maserati Quattroporte engine.”
