道德经上篇：《道经》
第十二章
【原文】
五色令人目盲，五音令人耳聋，五味令人口爽①，驰骋畋猎②，令人心发狂，难得之货，令人行妨③。是以圣人为腹不为目④，故去彼取此⑤。
【注释】
①爽：指口腔味觉发生毛病。
②田久：打猎。
③妨：本指妨碍、损害的意思，这里特指盗窃、掠夺之类行为。
④腹：是指内在自我。目：指外在自我或感觉世界。
⑤彼：指外。此：指内。
【译文】
五光十色绚丽多彩的颜色，容易使人眼花缭乱；纷繁嘈杂的音调，容易使入耳朵受到伤害；香馥芬芳、浓郁可口的食物，容易败坏人的口味；放马飞驰醉心狩猎，容易使人心情放荡发狂；稀奇珍贵的货物，容易使人失去操守，犯下偷窃的行为。因此，圣人只求三餐温饱，不追逐声色犬马的外在诱惑。应该抛去外物的引诱来确保安足纯朴的生活。
English Translation

Many colors blind the eyes;
Many tones deafen the ears;
Delicacies spoil the taste;
Riding and hunting make the heart go wild;
Hard-to-find treasures corrupt life.
In governing the people, the Holy One provides inner fulfillment,
not pleasures of the eye.
Thus, one thing is chosen and the other discarded.
