(Five nostalgic poems on Nanjing)

The Stone City

Surrounded by hills, this old capital, its environs still in place---

Flood-tides still storm the empty city, and ebb, and quiet befalls.

East of the waters of Qinhuai River, that same old ancient moon,

Deep in the night, still climbs across the jagged battlement walls.

Stone City

The site with surrounding hills still remains;

The tides pound the hollow city and return disconsolate.

To the east of the Qinhuai River the same moon, as ever before,

In the depth of night rises again over the battlements.

Stone Fortress

Midst hills stands the old capital, and its ruinous rampart remains,

Crashing against the empty fortress, waves are lonely in their regress.

To the east of Qinhuai River, rises the eternal moon beyond ages,

Late at night, moonlight sneaks over the parapet walls.

Wuyi or Swallows’ Lane

Beside the Zhuque Bridge wild flowers thickly grow,

Along the Wuyi Lane the sun is setting low.

Where once the swallows knew the mansions of the great,

They now to humbler homes would fly to nest and mate.

 The Street of Mansions

Beside the Bridge of Birds rank grasses overgrow;

Over the Street of Mansions the setting sun hangs low.

Swallows which skimmed by painted eaves in bygone days

Are dipping now among the humble homes’ doorways.
