含“鸟”的中文成语和谚语随便一查至少有60之多，比如，惊弓之鸟；倦鸟知返；鸟啼花落等等; 著名的谚语不得不提这句：夫妻本是同林鸟，大难临头各自飞（When the going gets tough, the tough gets going）。有时候，挂在嘴边的“鸟人”也一词多意，如喜欢鸟的人，很喜漂亮的人，早起的人，或者老壳（南方说法）有问题的人...。英语里也一样，也有很多有关Bird词语，如毫无价值的东西被称作“for the birds”, 把一件事情搞砸叫着“lay an egg”, 形容一个人“憨”，则称为“bird brain”, 其实，鸟儿非常聪明，有书为鸟正名，如Jennifer Ackerman著的c《The Genius of Birds》和《The Bird Way》。
很多美国家庭喜欢在自家后院喂鸟、观鸟，称为Backyard Birding，东部很容易观察到两种讨人喜爱的鸟，即北方红鸟（Northern Cardinal）和卡罗莱纳鹪鹩（Carolina Wren），网络上是这样描述它们的：
Northern Cardinals: The male is perhaps responsible for getting more people to open up a field guide than any other bird. 夏天里，美国东部的丛林中似乎回响着Carolina Wren的美妙歌声。它易受惊吓，因此不容易看到。但它小小躯体却能够发出高分贝的惊人声音，寻着后院或者丛林传来似茶壶的尖鸣声，一般会如愿以偿地见到它鲜艳的桂皮颜色的羽毛、白色的眉毛，以及翘起的长尾。数十年来，在冬季，它强悍的足迹不断向北方延伸。
仔细观察，北方红鸟（Northern Cardinal）长了一个葵花子嘴，似乎注定喜欢嗑瓜子。雄性北方红鸟在地上找到食之后，会主动和灰色雌鸟分享，这和哺喂小鸟有区别，鸟孩子们多是被动地张开嘴，抖动未丰满的羽翼，呀呀待哺，而夫妻鸟之间的互动喂食如此自然优美，很难用单一的中文词来描述，比如欣赏，珍视、感谢、感恩、喜欢等等，不过英文“appreciate”一词或许很贴切，因为，哪有理所当然的事情。而那些有着尖细小嘴的鸟如Carolina Wren也有办法，发现它们用双脚爪压住一粒葵瓜子，然后一点一点用尖嘴剥掉外壳，可爱致极。因此，有这样的说法（成语）“Eat Like a Bird”，形容一个人的饭量小，其实，鸟儿的饭量惊人，每天可以进食量接近自已的体量，像鸟一样地吃，后果可想而知。
