Ultimate comfort food at congee and noodle shops around Hong Kong
Many of the most renowned congee and noodle shops in Hong Kong are small, cramped and noisy mom & pop operations in less than ideal surroundings and locales. Some are tucked in small alleys, nondescript street corners, or generic municipal building cooked food centers. The usually rickety tables and stools may be sticky, the floors are often slippery and wet, and patrons will most likely have to share tables with complete strangers. Oh, but the fares they serve up are the heart and soul of Cantonese comfort food.
The breakfast of choice include : creamy, savory porridge loaded with fresh seafood, meats and innards; piping hot wonton noodle soup and fish ball/fish cake with rice noodle; tender braised briskets and trotters over al dente egg noodles; and side dishes of blanched tender kale or fried dough sticks. Once on a trip to Hong Kong, I devoted a whole day - breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night meal - to dining at congee/noodle shops. It was an unforgettable experience.
