Dear Dr. He and Mr. Li: Enclosed is a bank check of $300 to support the Chinese AIDS orphans. I hope this money will be used in its fullest in order to best the needs of the talented kids I am donating to. As a student myself, I know the hardships a student must face to develop his/her brain and achieve a higher sense of understanding. However, I live with the privilege of free education and a supporting family that provides the financial backing I need. I could only imagine how difficult it would be to live in a world where these were unattainable, and this why I wish to donate to this organization. I was born in Wuhan, China in 1990, and immigrated to the United States a year later. Currently, I am a junior at Westview High School in Portland, Oregon. Even though I grew up in American, I have a strong sense of pride concerning my Chinese background. Throughout my childhood, I have been studying and speaking Chinese. I frequently watch Chinese films such as The Legend of the Monkey King. Every year I join my parents in viewing the Spring Festival Celebration program on CCTV. I have gone back to China to visit my grandparents several times. By visiting various towns and cities, as well as many different popular sightseeing areas, I feel a connection to China and its culture. On the list of destinations there was the rural farmland, my grandfather’s homeland in Luoshan County, Henan Province. In fact, I still remember that, while arguing with my sister over which bed we would sleep in when I was on the train, a fellow passenger asked us why we couldn’t sleep in one bed since my sister is not required to have a ticket, and we merely said it would be too crowded. This fellow then told us that the price of buying the extra bed would pay for a child’s education for a year in Henan, which shocked me, considering me a small sense of the daily life of those people, I am interested in supporting poor orphans in particularly henna, which matches your organization’s goal too. As growing older, I become more familiar with the problem in the world. AIDS is one of the major diseases that wipes about more than 2,400 people a day. Everyday, there are commercials pleading people to donate to help orphans, provide clean water, education, healthcare, etc. As I watched the poor faces on the screen, I longed to find some way of helping them. Before, I had no means of making money, so I could do nothing. Now, I have attained my black belt in Taekwondo, and I have been working in the school as a part time assistant instructor to teach kids. This $300 is all the money I have got over past five months. I still have a mere two years until I leave for college, even though such an exorbitant amount of money would be a great start, the sum didn’t really suit the context of college. My memories of those the poor faces of orphans came back into my head, and I felt exuberant at the thought of achieving what I could not do so before. I feel great by having this chance to help the brothers and sisters in the land where my grandparent came from. Thanks to my mother who has helped me to find the suitable and reliable organization, and proposed to help AIDS orphans in China. She did all the translating and contacting work since my Chinese is still fairly limited. I am confident this check will be in the safe hands and help changing the lives of those who most need it. Sincerely, Zeheng Wang
