A three-way catalytic converter (TWC) must be exposed to both a rich exhaust to help reduce NOx emissions and a lean exhaust to help reduce HC and CO emissions. In other words, the catalytic converter must be fed the correct mixture or it can be killed.
* A rich mixture will kill the catalytic converter (CAT) all of the time because, just like a real live cat, too much food will kill it.
* A lean mixture will also kill the CAT all of the time because it will starve to death.
The purpose of the oxygen sensor(s) is to keep the air-fuel mixture within the correct range for the proper operation of the catalytic converter. If the oxygen sensor fails, the the catalytic converter damage is likely to occur.
Now you know why I am telling you to pay attention to the code related to the mixture and oxygen sensors. Each vehicle houses at least one or more Cats that need you, the driver,to feed him/them right food.
