How to hone your perfect British Summer Time wardrobe

We love to talk about the weather. Or rather, how it is near impossible to dress for these unpredictable spells of rain, lightning (!) and sunshine. So, to end our wardrobe woes once and for all, we have decided to compile a definitive shopping list on what to buy to fill the gaps in your summer wardrobe. We might love to chat, but this time we’re really listening...

The shirt dress

The faithful friend that never will never fail to pull you together. Fifties silhouettes sing of elegance and Riviera chic, while fluid shirts can be layered over wide-leg trousers for a breezy take on office tailoring. Invest in a handful of styles - one classic cinched-waist cut to tick off formal occasions, one semi-sheer option to throw over bikinis at the beach, one loose shirt with avant-garde tie detailing to show your abstract side in the office - and be confident in the knowledge that you will always have something flattering to wear.

Cropped denim jeans

Culottes have been ousted as this year’s summer trouser in favour of cropped denim. Though frayed and step hem styles are du jour, a pair of classic rigid cotton jeans will form the casual base layer to all your summer blouses and tops.

Tuck a Breton tee into high-waisted jeans that fall just above the ankle and wear with white plimsolls. Let breezy shirt dress tails float down your denim and throw backless loafers into the mix. Or try a gypsy blouse for a weekend ensemble that shouts out for fun summer sandals or espadrilles. No one will notice you have worn the same Levis 501s underneath for the whole week.

Espadrilles

The espadrille’s storied past gives the shoe style a classic note we don’t associate with sandals. (Fact: It can be traced back as far as the 14th Century, but it was 1927-founded brand Castañer that popularised the shoe style as a product of military interest after the Spanish Civil War.) Nowadays rope soled shoes are an elegant summer alternative to ballet flats, loafers and brogues, and are not quite so exposing as sandals.
