当时尼克松是副总统，肯尼迪还仅仅是一名参议员，但是已经准备代表民主党竞选总统,而尼克松当时是副总统，准备竞选共和党的总统，两人是对手。尼克松出事故受了伤，肯尼迪给他发电报表示慰问，说等你伤好了，自俩再打，很有风度。档案馆网上没找到肯尼迪电文。尼克松回电，当然是感谢，然后他说了一句中国人绝对忌讳的话：希望你不要发生类似的事故。即使竞争对头，也不能说这种话吧？不知是美国人这样说话很正常，还是尼克松不会说话，他是有名的不善于人际关系。
