Coal
By Jing Yu
Translated by Jin Shouzhi and Jing Yu
I
Am
The silence buried in
Darkness from one hundred million years ago
The fate twisted my body
Overwhelmed by the high heat
Flipping ups and downs
In the big hands of the earth’s crust
Solid like the rocks
Nurturing along with
The heavy pressures underground
Quietly living in silence
Though several long centuries
I know this endless waiting
Will eventually see the light of day
I strongly believe to emerge from darkness
And see light once more
You will use your passion
To set me in flames
To set me in flames
Let me be the shining light
And light up this world’s fire
To set me in flames
It will warm up the long lasting vicissitudes of life
Also will break up this ancient silence
And then
I will smile in the residual warmth of the dust
And touch the soil underneath the feet
Glad to tell you
About this permanent world
Only to have burned out the innermost warmth
I would not regret having been here, period.
