Nathan Chen & his Journey are an Inspiration to Normal Families
Thursday was a crowning moment for Chen, he brought the U.S. team a Gold medal, first gold in 12 years for men's figure skating. Media compares Nathan Chen to Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Tom Brady, regarding him as the greatest figure skater of his generation.
When looking at Chen's journey, we see a normal family where parents nurture the interests of their kids. Chen's parents are not from elite schools, nor do they have any prestigious pedigree. Chen's father studied medicine in China and come to the US for graduate school. His mom could not even speak English when arriving in the US. The family settled down in Salt Lake City and raised 5 kids there.
Ordinary families can relate to how the Chens raised their kids. In it they see the tenacity of ordinary people. People also see how the second generation of an immigrant family improved their lives. Moreover, people see how the communities help the family to survive and grow. The warm feeling of community helping families to realize their dreams. In other words, Chen family is an example of the success of normal immigrant families with the help from the community.
The best thing about Nathan Chen is not the title of Olympic championship, world record, or Yale. It is actually the feeling that to have fulfillment and happiness is rather simple. If you love life and freedom, you will feel gifted by being simple. When you feel simple, you perhaps start to grow your joy.
