I bought this book, reminding me of the first time I heard his name from J.F. seminar with his quote: driving at night, only seeing the road of your headlight.

"You can't repeat the past." - Nick Carraway--Can you imagine someone loving you that much. And all he wants to do is go back to what once was []
The artistry of the cinematography is beautiful. The narration lines straight from the book, the visual representations of the key themes/symbolism from the book.. the green light, the eyes of god, etc. I also love the actors they chose and the costumes are fabulous.
When I first saw this movie when it came out in the theater I did think much about it. Looking back now, I think I wanted to be another Moulin Rouge ( one of my all time favorite movies) and did not appreciate it for what it was. But now seeing it for the second time, I absolutely love it, the beautiful costumes, the music, it's just so stunning to look at. Baz Luhrmann is an amazing filmmaker, who doesn't get enough credit, he's a genius!! Forgot to mention the cameo appearance of Baz himself at 45:08 as the head waiter, that was a nice surprise!!

1 day agoBaz Luhrmann is my favorite director. From the classic Romeo & Juliet to Moulin Rouge then the Great Gatsby and now Elvis. He makes such vibrant and beautiful movies. He really outdid himself with this adaptation. This modern version was brilliant.

3 days agoI love this movie. The soundtrack was used in my first show in high school marching band, the Centerville Jazz Band of Centerville, OH in 2015, in my freshman year. That was my favorite show of all four that I did in my high school marching band career. We performed our show, entitled "Gatsby" in the Georgia Dome on Halloween day in 2015. I will never forget that show because it was performed mere months before the Georgia Dome was demolished and replaced by the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This movie will always have a special place in my heart. Leonardo DiCaprio was incredible in this film. I loved Tobey Maguire as Nick Caraway.

1 day ago (edited)I've read the book dozens of times. it's on my nightstand. loved the Redford movie. At first, merely LIKED this version. Saw it again today and i LOVE it. It's not as book-accurate but captures the essence better. It's the opulence and party: in both the book and Redford's it's hard to IMAGINE a party that the whole city wants to go to. It's hard to IMAGINE a house that's a light to moths. But this...this version has built a house, a party, even the scene with the shirts is BROUGHT TO LIFE with the set design and DiCaprio's charisma and acting chops. Even Tom....the movie captured his *physicality* -- he's always in motion, picking people up, grabbing people by the arm, by the hand, by the shoulders and neck (Wilson), pushing people around (Wilson), throwing stuff (riding crop at the valet, football at Nick, money at Wilson) banging his glass against Gatsby's (instead of a gentle toast), and lashing out (Myrtle at the apartment and at cop by Myrtle's corpse). Even when Gatsby attacked Tom, he was fearless and BUTTED heads with Jay, more BRUTE than civilized man, unafraid of conflict, as gifted physically as financially. And Leo...the gamut of human emotions: shadiness, fear, embarrassment, confusion, anger, resolution...and hope. Most importantly, the two best lines in the book AND movie were delivered perfectly: "Cant repeat the past? Of course you can, Old Sport. Of course you can." and "They're a rotten bunch. You're worth the lot of them combined." I'm rewatching this again
tomorrow.
