Looking back at these old series... Dense, intelligent dialogue, scenes as long as they need to be (not assuming an audience attention span of no more than 30 seconds) and NO booming music. It's another world.

Churchill's years as a political outcast should be appreciated for what they were: a time of incredible effort on Winston's part to stay afloat financially, keep his family obligations, and maintain his voice in the House of Commons despite his poor popularity. Perhaps we should appreciate Churchill for these years instead of for his work as First Lord and Prime Minister. After all, it is what a person does when they are not popular, quite friendless, and generally unnoticed that demonstrates their true character and nature.
Rather than anti German rhetoric,Churchill accurately describes the anti Semitic hatred the Nazi ideology was based on. This hatred was directed against Jews,Slavs, and anyone who accepted the under mensch into their country.

Robert Hardy (RIP) gives a method acting masterclass as Churchill. Many have played him, but Hardy is fantastic.... Also I think he steals the show in All Creatures Great and Small, as Siegfried ?

What a cast ! I wonder how much Mr Hardy had to rehearse before delivering what many hold to be the definitive portrayal of this great man. A most enjoyable hour.

Indywaves, Thanks for providing this series for us to enjoy. Focusing on the less well-known difficult period of Churchill's career-accurate depiction by the always excellent Robert Hardy. This episode shows the consternation caused by the Wall Street crash of 1929!

Just finished #8. Marvellous. Whatever you think about the personalities involved. I still find it a shame that we’ve given-up making such political drama for adults. But none of the characters had ruby-laser eyes, or teleportation skills. None of them could communicate with ghosts or command weather systems. None of them was fighting a noisy battle against horrors caused by early trauma. So not at all the sort of thing they want to hear about these days, at the commissioning editor’s office.
Many thanks for this. I just watched "The Forsyte Saga" and have been wanting to see more of Eric Porter's work.

Robert Hardy was a superb actor. Amazing some of the characters he has portrayed. R.I.P you were one of the best. Thank you for uploading this series, first time I have seen it.

A truly brilliant cast; Hardy, Barkworth, Porter, Woodward, Piggot - Smith, Havers, Phillips, Freeman, Clive & David Swift, Robert James, Peter Vaughan, Nigel Stock, Moray Watson, erc, etc.

What can be said. This is television historical drama of the highest quality. The BBC produced some many dramas in the 1970s that were unbelievably good. These series made tv worth the time. Some of the streaming services are trying to rejuvenate the tv drama. But, the bean counters, the jealous, and the talent handicapped will probably kill the trend. Quality is the enemy of the mediocre and second rate. Unfortunately, the two types just mentioned rule in the entertainment industry
