A Verse by Su Shi

Night lodging at the Swallow Tower of Peng Town, of the courtesan, hight Pan Pan, I dreamt, therefore I composed this Ci-poem.

The bright moon shines, as if frost glows,

The light air sweeps, as if stream flows,

Such scenery, only heaven can pose.

Fish leap in curvy bay without ado,

Round lotus leaves spill pearls of dew,

Albeit serenity is rare, viewers are few.

The third watch strikes drums three,

Startling a dreaming leaf at this hour of wee,

Awakening the dreamer from his gloomy sea.

Enduring this vast night, alack,

No way could he dream back,

Rambling in the garth, pitch-black,

A weary drifter beneath the sky,

On his way home in the mountain, his longing eye

Fixing homeward, with sigh...

Now empty is the Swallow Tower,

Alas, where is the lass of a fair flower?

Only purple martins come by her Bower.

Albeit the past and present are a dream,

None will awaken from such a fancy scheme,

For old joy and new grief - the karmic theme.

Some night in a future year,

Afore the Yellow Tower, someone will peer,

And sigh for him, as he does tonight here.
