It never occurred to her that she could be the mother of a child that didn’t look like her. That’s the bad part of living in a 99% white small town. This was in the early 90s. I hope attitudes around here have changed bc we now have gone down to 84% white , and 8 % black.
I have several black grandchildren myself and my five year old granddaughter and my daughter in law were called the N word by a neighbor when they first bought their house here in town. Small town mentality. My own mother was racist. I’m so glad I didn’t turn out anything like her.
