close encounters with 跨国婚姻

As my husband and I were going through our normal Saturday routine, we ran into many couples that we know, and I just realized that they were all 跨国婚姻s. I found that really interesting and wanted to write about them here.

First we ran into my Indian friend G and her husband on the street. She told me that she found a professor position she really likes and her husband is going to stay at home and look after the baby for a while. I was really happy for her, because although her husband is serious about his career, I know she is even more serious about hers, and I'm glad that her husband is willing to make the compromise.

At the grocery store, I ran into my friend D and his fiancee. She is from the middle east and they met while he was doing activist work there. As usual, they are still very into protests and grass root politics. They are getting married in the summer, and hopefully all this activism and the fact that she is from the middle east will not give her too much trouble in applying for permanent residency.

We then went out to dinner with an American/eastern European couple. The husband and wife met while working at the same international organization in Europe. Both of them are extremely intellectual but the wife, who is an American, surprised me by telling us that she is considering staying at home with her kid.

Lastly, want to say to those who think their 跨国婚姻 is being 歧视-ed:
FORGIVE YOUR ENEMIES, NOTHING WILL ANNOY THEM MORE(Oscar Wilde).
