My view of Lust - Caution

Why director Ang Lee changed the original story line to add a segment of prearranging the purchase of the diamond ring?


The original story is Wang set up a trap at the jeweler where the assassination will carry out. Wang used an excuse of repairing an earring to get Wang to the jeweler. Wang was stunned when Mr. Yi bought her the most expensive diamond ring in the store on the spot.

I like the original version much better than the one in Ang Lee’s movie.

In my opinion, Lee’s movie lost the punch line of the original story. Wang’s was a lost girl, she needs attentions from the audience, from the drama group, from the secret agent man Mr. Wang. She wants to be a hero, but deep in her heart there is no right or wrong. All she wants is to be in the spot light.

While shifting from one purpose to the other, she got herself and people around her killed.

Lust-Caution, the original is Eileen version of the “Hamlet” , an excellent work toke her 30 years to finished.
