Answer:  If you need to travel outside the United States while your I-485 application being processed, you need to send an I-131 form to USCIS for Travel Document application.

For non-citizens, you need permission to return to the United States after traveling abroad. This permission is granted through a travel document, or Advanced Parole. With the approval of your Advanced Parole, you do not need a U.S. visa to get into United States after your international travel.

But if you have a valid H-1B visa or L1 visa, and your I-1485 is pending, you do not have to apply for an Advanced Parole to travel to outside United States and come back. Please also see: http://www.greencardapply.com/i485/i485_ead.htm
