1947年3月18日晚，在国民党军进攻延安已清晰可闻的枪炮声中，毛泽东、周恩来依依不舍地告别了居住了十年的延安，开始了转战陕北的伟大历程。

临行前，毛泽东对前来送行的西北野战兵团的领导干部们说：“我军打仗，不在一城一地的得失，而在于消灭敌人的有生力量。存人失地，人地皆存；存地失人，人地皆失。”“我们要以一个延安换取全中国。”
