Chapter 6

Zhang Yunxuan was demobilized from the army and arranged by the provincial leadership to be President of the Provincial Commerce Chamber. There was a leader in the council from the military side, named Chen Jiagen, a regimental commander. Mr. Chen was from a farmer’s family of Shangdong Province, without any education. As the movement of suppressing the reactionaries went on, Mr. Chen had little trust in Zhang Yunxuan and conflicts often occurred between them at work. Mr. Chen tended to oppose to the suggestions put forward by Mr. Zhang. To Chen, Zhang wasn’t worth respecting.

Chen’s contempt for Zhang was betrayed in his gestures. He often said that the Communists showed tolerance to the captives, the Communists never ill-treated the ordinary people, the Communists never surrendered, and the Communists never tolerated traitors. As for Zhang’s breakaway from the Kuomintang troops to the Communists, Chen just said:

“Can we consider that to be a righteous and revolutionary act? No, Zhang did this just for his fame and fortune.”

Zhang felt depressed at Chen’s word. Half a year later, Zhang Yunxuan wanted to resign from his post.

When Zhang Yunxuan broke away from the Kuomintang Party to the Communists, he was thinking about some contributions to national unity and just cause. But the reality disappointed him. Yesterday, Chen entered Zhang’s office. It was quite unusual. Chen had never taken Zhang as an equal in social status and citizenship though they were both from the army. Chen said in a mysterious way:

“President Zhang, we think that it’s necessary for people of your backgrounds to experience our suppression movement in the countryside. Tomorrow morning, go to the Political Division of the Provincial Communist Party Committee for registration.” He gloated over Zhang’s puzzlement.

Zhang Yunxuan went to the Political Division the next day. It was Mr. Yan Zhengfu who met him. They hadn’t seen each other for a long time. Mr. Yan was then a well-known political figure of the province. On public occasions they saw each other very often, but just nodded as a signal of greetings. History seemed to tell them that they would never have the opportunity to speak to each other heartily. No longer could they sleep in the same thatched house, talking about the future of China, the will of the people, freedom, human rights, and the development of Communism.

Mr. Cao Fade, a copy clerk, took Zhang Yunxuan to Mr. Yan’s office. This was a spacious but simple room. There were some documents on the desk, and there was a copy of Xinqian Daily on the newspaper clipper. Cao Fade left the room. Mr. Yan shook hands warmly with Mr. Zhang. He asked him to sit down. Mr. Cao entered the room with two cups of tea. The talk began between Mr. Yan and Mr. Zhang.

Yan looked at Zhang seriously, and showed much concern for him, “Do you have a cousin named Zhang Yunchang in Qingyan?”

Zhang was surprised at the question but answered, “Yes.”

“Is he your housekeeper?”

“No. How could that be?”

“But in his title deed for land the owner is your father Mr. Zhang Jitao.”

At this Zhang Yunxuan relaxed his brows. He told Yan of the relation between his father and the deed.

Yan was puzzled. He said, “Why didn’t your father make an agreement of grant given that the field involved was not little?”

“The field granting was done by my father for his brother. Mr. Song who worked at my home knew that. People in my family knew the field was granted to Mr. Zhang Yunchang, who rented it to others. I don’t know where the field is and who rents it.”

“But why did your father make him the owner of the deed?”

Zhang Yunxuan answered in an awkward way, “He did this for the honor of the family. My uncle was an opium taker. Maybe my father was worried that my uncle would sell the land for opium if he were not the owner of the deed. In 1948, my father left a message of grant before he passed away. It was written by Mr. Song. You know land is a sensitive issue at present. My cousin is reluctant to show it to others.”

Yan had a sip of tea, saying to Cao, “What do you think of this?”

Cao replied, “Definitely President Zhang’s cousin is unwilling to produce the message of grant. Anyway, who would like to risk doing that in these years?”

Yan motioned to Cao, saying, “Please go and check if the people and cars are ready.”

Cao went out. Yan came to the window, and looked at the lush trees in the government compound courtyard. He mentioned to Zhang Yunxuan in a hinting way, “When you play the chess of Weiqi, you tend to act somewhere else in order to save an isolated string of pieces. In fact life is just like that. Today, some of the provincial and city leaders are going to attend the open criticism party of the landlords and reactionaries. I know you have a landlord cousin. So I’d like to advice to you to stay away from the intimate relationship with your cousin for your own sake.” Zhang Yunxuan was quite thankful for Yan’s advice. He was glad to have Yan as his friend. Indeed some Communists knew his contributions and wanted to protect him from the movement of suppressions. Zhang hoped that the partisan conflicts would be reduced and compromised as people came to know each other more. Yan was a Communist that Zhang admired a lot. Just listen to Yan’s word: The Communists should have a better understanding of themselves in order to save and develop China.
