作为一部包揽了金球奖、奥斯卡和葛莱美最佳电影配乐殊荣的作品，《星球大战》的魅力甚至征服了许多专门演奏古典音乐的大型管弦乐团，美国国家爱乐管弦乐团就是其中之一。影片上映的同年12月，在指挥家Charles Gerhardt的率领下，他们重新演奏了约翰·威廉姆斯所创作的6段配乐，并连同约翰创作的另一部作品《第三类接触》，一起发行了黑胶唱片。较之于首版原声粗糙的制作，这张33分钟的浓缩版《星球大战》，更无愧于作品本身的经典地位。1989年，RCA唱片公司又采用数字技术制作了它的CD版，使声音的品质进一步得到了提升。迄今为止，这款经过杜比环绕混音的CD，仍是所有《星球大战》唱片里最出色的一张。
1993年，“星战” 三部曲首次以套装的形式推出。四张CD中，除了《星球大战》、《帝国反击战》和《武士归来》各自的原声，还有一张集合了这三部影片配乐的合集。尽管每张唱片都增加了一些从前未发行的曲目，但由于这些曲目为画面节奏服务的痕迹太重，加之编排的失误，它并没有象预期那样引来一片喝彩之声。
