The first picture has a modem lock for bike on the front wall. That lock should be the product within 10 years. Also the air conditional unit on the wall should be within 20 years.
The picture three has energy-saving light tube and filtered-water unit which should be within 10 years.
Picture 7 has ads on the wall that should be within 10years, at least in 20 years.
Picture 10 has picture on the wall shows the style of 1990’s.
Picture 11 has a bike on the right hand corner of 2000’s product.
So I guess that most pictures can be identified as resent photos, but the topic of the article should be changed.

these pictures is to remind everyone that some people still live poorly in spite of rapid improvement of chinese people's living condition.
So, are you saying that Howard French or someone else took these pictures thirty years ago and now took them out ...? for what purpose? great imagination. I think you have a mind problem, worse than inferior complex.

You can tell that they are old from the address they ware and the things in the photo. Like the beer/drink basket on the ground next to the girl. Who sell the bottles of beer/drink now using that kind of basket?
The navy stripe type of T shirt was stylish in 70's and you will have hard time to buy anythings like that!
If you are a fair dinkum,tTravel to Shanghai yourself and get reallife photos of poor area to show us. They are still there but not like these photos here. Shanghai is not a perfect city but is much more modern in most of the streets.

From viewing Howard French's picture gallery, one can tell that he is very good at taking B/W photos. Some of the pictures posted here can also be found in the following website. A good reminder of how the poor and lower level people living in China and everywhere in this world, but nothing is or should be related with World Expo.
I saw old Shanghai neighborhood pictures like these ones from Howard French a few years ago. The article header was added by the wenxuecity editors. The pictures have nothing to do with things like the Expo. But even if they do, so what? With the rapidly disappearing old neighborhoods in big cities, isn't it nice to remember the past with a sense of nostalgia?

Some Chinese here have the problem of inferiority complex, a common problem for many Chinese. The picture author Howard French lived in Shanghai for 5 years. He wrote many articles on New York Times about the "new and rising" China. What's problem of showing pictures like this?
In my area........Kaohsuing city ,Taiwan
you may find something like them.......but much clean.

No surprise at all I don't know what Howard French wants to tell us? Those scene can be found in any big city in the world. I can find more shitty places in New York, no problem at all.
