做reference的常识

找工作不容易,过五关斩六将,最后被自己的reference阻拦住,这是最不应该发生的事。找reference Rule no. 1, 老土以前提到过的:“只找说咱好话的人作reference, 3q!”
做reference Rule no. 1: 咱只说他的好话, 3q!

我为一些同事做过reference, 有白人、印度人,(中国人不一定放心我的语言能力),从没砸过锅。从我自己找工作的过程中学习到的几个案例,总结出的我对类似问题的标准答案:

1 我在铃儿响叮当公司的reference:此人坐过接近于VP的管理职位,如果不是因为反托拉斯法,公司合了分,分了合,恐怕不会止步于此。

- How do you rate his brain surgery skill, range is 1 to 10, 10\'s the best.

- 9

- Why do you give him 9, not 10?

- (此公立即警觉到自己漏嘴了)well, nobody is perfect, nobody knows everything, each everyone of us got to improve at some point somehow, don\'t you agree? I think 9 is a very very good score.

- But you seemed having reservation about him...

- (开始补台)No, I would recommend him without any reservation. He\'s very knowledgeable. He is the go to person in the group.

- Why you gave him 9 then?

- (修正)I did not fully understand your score system just now. OK, let me correct myself. I give him 10. He can do the job, with excellent quality and efficiency.

打分不能吝啬。不要让人觉得你有所保留。不要扣分,这不是学校考试。

2 回答tricky的问题,比如:该同志有何需要改进之处。

我在国际大嘴公司的老板是这样回答的:

He is the perfect employee in my team. He took the initiative of rewriting XYZ system, cutting the new service delivery time from 2 weeks to 1 hour. I am perfectly happy with his work. Unfortunately our client stopped the contract with us, so I don\'t have the fund to keep him. I hate to see him leave. I feel very frustrated that the company sent good people to the street. I would not hesitate to call him back if the situation is changed.

做reference不是到法庭作证,要把每一个问题都当作推销机会。犀利旺的reference不懂得扭转话题,恰恰说明需要提高语言能力的是他自己,而不是高IQ/EQ的犀利旺。

做reference,当然只能说好话。不过有些人比较naive,无意中说了貌似客观的话,结果却毁了别人。给人做reference是希望申请人能得到那份工作,这是唯一的目标,一切话题都不可偏离这个目标。做reference就得象卖房子一样,要绝对避免一切负面的评论。

如果你找的reference没有这点儿basic common sense,趁早换人 -- 你卖房子,你会雇一个向客户传达负面信息的二百五中介吗?
