二十世纪中叶时,一位德国的作家写了一本很短的书叫作「箭术之禪意」,透过这本书,忽然西方世界认识了一种传袭在东方千年之久的心灵艺术:禪。这本书,是他在日本学习一位熟习禪宗心境并将之运用於箭术的大师后的心得。后来此书又在五三年译成英文,影响了日后的嬉皮风潮的主要心态。而六零年代很多西方的思想家、艺术家和音乐家,也都透过这本书,开始思考将禪的境界运用到冥思和表演、绘画以及音乐演奏中。其中小提琴家曼纽因就很推崇此书。事实上,我们也可以将小提琴的弓和四弦,看成射箭中的弓和弦,而演奏者对待其乐器的态度,也正如射箭者的专注。但是对於听音乐的人而言,禪学的放鬆则是可以透过音乐来鞤助,透过规律而稳定的乐声,可以让聆者身体和心灵都获得相当程度的放鬆与专注,较容易达到禪学要求的境界。这份选辑就收录了包括卡普松、凡格罗夫、西寇维兹基等小提琴名家在内的多首小提琴名曲,选的都是乐曲中的慢速度乐章,让聆者不致因此受到干扰。在放鬆中,更可培养对音乐的美学领会。
