"gaze" has been a big subject in film studies, which overlaps a lot with lit...
modern technology has turned people into visual animals.....
considering the time when that foto was taken, i am positive that it must have been taken by an European or American ....
what comes in mind now??

i personally think, what's beneath Feminism is the awakening of senses and to live to her fullest of life as a woman, as a Man (interesting, when i put Man here), more than asking for "being equal" . . . a man who does not search for his soul is still "inferior" and new to his internal landscape . . . such as Joe Wu in your novel . . .
this photo is classic, not only because it was taken back then and historical, but it captures something in which words are meaningless . . . as i always say, the beauty of mystery . . . depending on our imagination to "interpret" it . two little fawns see their reflections in each other's eyes on the surface of water . . .
这幅照片里，是一个Boy 和一个 Nude还有他们的肤色, 如果换成成人的Male, Female，或换成别的肤色，想想会是什么效果？？？ 这张照片里我以为更体现了男女平等发生在同样 innocent的眼睛之间。。。这张照片震动我的是自然与一样 innocent 的眼睛，自然的 Boy 和自然的 Nude，他们的姿态和眼神的自然与和谐，毫不设防，传达着某种难以言明的交流，抑或什么都没有交流，只是一个瞬间的美。。。使照片很传神，神即很原始很自然的一种不设防，这种瞬间发生在一个健康的 Boy 和一个健康的 Nude之间。。。一个“健康”的Boy这样看一个Nude很自然，一个“健康”的Nude没有任何羞涩或忸怩，为什么？其实以女人的心态来说，渴望被gaze and gaze back，但是前提是对什么样的眼睛和眼神，对象很重要，你们看到过那种眼睛吗？让你们有愿望可以赤裸裸而无所拘束快乐表达“野性”的眼睛。。。这张照片里包含了很多未言明的美感与吸引。。。另外这张照片的场景在窗边，很有意味，窗户，眼睛也是窗户，还有窗户的形状，这样的方格形状，透过拘束，Boy的眼神，Nude 露出的是上半身。。。如果换成全裸，会是什么效果？？？所以希望，希望在哪里？男女平等在阳光下怎么可能？？？即使在夜里，现代人多是“各怀鬼胎”，少有不设防的“纯净”，怎么可能男女平等？？？即使在窗户边也是一个 Boy and Nude。。。The fuel of hope is innocence...
作舟的诗抓住了这张照片的关键，表达了一个 Nature Boy 的自然，诗人这样不设防的回忆，给我的感觉很艺术很美很动人，什么都没有多想，只是觉得那一刻很自然。。。

the female nude gazing back in the foto seems very interesting to me....
modern lit. & visual productions used to be dominated by male gaze, that is, female is being looked at, like an object....
part of feminist lit. was to "gaze back," right??
i was struck by the time when the foto was taken, and the gazing back of the nude....male is not dominant, but only a boy figure who looks inncently....
thus, my own memory ... :)

that vintage foto definitely inspired me......taken in 1915!!!!
诗里有很多可解读的趣味。。。喜欢最后的 “O m”， 读来像是于末了发出的一声很惬意的声音，传递着“新概念”，“_ _ O m”的新概念… 于TIME里，一切不复，“O m”生生不息。。。
? - imagination – language – imagination – new language – imagination …… - ?
如果 language 不限定在语言，而是表达表意表达感觉或意识等等的任何一种形式。。。“language is the needle”，穿透鸿蒙。。。如果不是TIME 的prisoner ，世界对他来说，皆为“混沌”，所以整首诗读来给我有种穿透力的感觉。。。

we can, at least, we try to visualize everything around us, visible or invisible, tangible or intangible, of form or formless. . . through feeling and imagination, the Gift. . . . e.g. when we say time, "irreversible', that's just because we, as individual, cannot see recurrences in our life; however, to the eyes of “history”, birth and death are recurring, things like mistakes or wars are repeating . . . stories always there, but carried on by different individuals from the same group of living creatures, that we call humankind . . . endless journeys witnessed by Time . . . or something we call Time.

"conceptualism" has its interesting elements.....but, it's made of "words" after all.... :)
"time" is one of those intriguingconcepts that can make us sound quite "foolish" at times.... :)
