Mexico City next for adventurers

Couple’s global odyssey nears end

By Jared Ferrie, Metro, Vancouver, BC

After pedaling about 150
kilometres each day for almost
three weeks, two Vancouver
adventurers are
closing in on Mexico City —
a major milestone in a
quest to circumnavigate
the globe using only human
power.

Colin Angus and fiancée
Julie Wafaei jumped back on
their bikes in Costa Rica
after rowing 144 days across
the Atlantic from Lisbon,
Portugal.

The journey from Vancouver
to Lisbon involved biking
as well as canoeing, hiking
and cross-country skiing.
Angus fired off an e-mail
update yesterday from
Tehaucan, about 180 kilometres
from Mexico City.

“The best part about cycling
is that every kilometre
pedaled is in the bank,” he
wrote. “When you're rowing,
a sudden headwind or backwards
current can quickly
erase a day’s work.”

Not that biking through
Central America has been
without its challenges. Although
the couple made it
through the breathtaking but
poverty-stricken region unscathed,
Angus said they felt
threatened several times by
people eying their equipment-
laden bicycles.

In Mexico, the biggest
danger comes from reckless
drivers, he added.
