go back to China with no passport?

I am a chinese with greencard and live in USA right now. Due to family emergency, I have to go back to China ASAP. But since I have turned in my old passport (it will expire soon) when I aplied for a new one, now I have no passport. As you guys know, usually our Chinese must have valid passport with us when leaving/entering either USA or China (probably this applies to most countries).

My question is, is it possible for me to go back to China with any other leagl documehanks? Is it possible to travel with photocopy of my old passport?
