Ox Devil King caught up with Monkey King before long. He saw Monkey King happily carrying the big fan on his shoulder. How to get back the fan? He thought that tough tactics wouldn’t work and he should try kid-gloves. Then he turned into Pig Bajie and stepped up. “Brother,” he said. “I’m coming.” “Brother, where are you going?” too excited to recognize the true colors of this false Bajie,Monkey King asked. “Our master is afraid that Ox Devil King is enormously capable and it’s too difficult for you to defeat him and get his treasure, so he asked me to come here to help you.” The false Bajie replied. “The fan is too big. I think it must be very heavy. Let me help you.”
Without thinking anything, Monkey King readily handed the fan to the false Pig Bajie. Taking over the fan, the false Bajie muttered something and the fan became small as a little apricot leave. Then the false Bajie turned back into Ox Devil King at once. “You wild monkey!” Ox Devil King cried. “Look here!. Can you recognize me?” Seeing this, Monkey King was in deep remorse. “It’s my fault!” he cursed himself. Flying into a rage, Monkey King took out his gold cudgel and struck Ox Devil King. And Ox Devil King fanned him at once. But this time Monkey King stood firmly because he swallowed the wind-avoiding pill into his stomach. Falling into utter confusion, Ox Devil King threw the fan into his mouth and fought Monkey King with a sword. These two were locked in a tangled fight.
Tang Monk waited for Monkey King together with Pig Bajie, Sha Monk and the village god. The master worried about his disciple who was fighting with Ox Devil King. “Ox Devil King is enormously able?” Tang Monk asked the village god. “Yes,” the god replied. “Bajie and Wujing,” called the master, “Who is willing to go and help Wukong?” “I will,” replied Bajie, “but I don’t know the way.” “I know,” said the god. “I’m willing to go with you.” “Thank you,” Tang Monk said to the god. Parting with Tang Monk and Sha Monk, Pig Bajie and the village god set out immediately. Before long, they saw Monkey King and Ox Devil King fighting fiercely. “Go and help Monkey King,” the god said to Pig Bajie. Running forward, Pig Bajie cried, “Brother, I’m coming to help you!” “You put me in an awful mess!” scolded Monkey King. “What do you mean?” asked Pig Bajie. “Our master asked me to come and help you. But I don’t know the way. We discussed it for a long time. Thanks to the village god. He volunteered to show me the way. So it’s a little bit late. How can it be that I put you in an awful mess?” “I blame you not for that,” said Monkey King. “What I mean is that the devil turned into your appearance and cheated me out the fan.” On his words, Pig Bajie was very angry and struck Ox Devil King mercilessly with his rake. “You dirty devil!” cursed Pig Bajie. “What a pretty mess you have done! How can you have the guts to turn into my appearance and cheat my brother and sow discord between my brother and me?”
Ox Devil King met Pig Bajie head-on at once. But very soon, he could barely parry the blows of Pig Bajie without the strength to hit back because he’d fought Monkey King for a whole day and was therefore tired out. He turned round and was going to run away but his way was blocked by the village god and the nether-world fighters. “Stop fighting, Ox Devil King!” said the god. “Tang Monk goes to take the Buddhist ures and all gods support him. Lend him the fan and help him cross the flame mountain. Otherwise, you’ll be punished and killed by the heaven.” “You village god,” said Ox Devil King. “You fail to distinguish right from wrong. It is the monkey but not me who did evils. The wild monkey not only made me lose my son but also cheated my wife and concubine out of the treasured fan. If only I could swallow him! How can I lend my treasure fanto him?” “Don’t talk nonsense!” cried Pig Bajie. “Surrender your fan! Or I won’t spare your life!” Hearing this, Ox Devil King flew into a rage and could do nothing but fight again. Fighting and retreating, Ox Devil King kept himself in a tangled battle. The fought the whole night, but it was still difficult to distinguish who would win. Day broke before long. They already came near the Moyun Cave of Jade Face Princess, the concubine of Ox Devil King. The princess was startled by the fierce fighting. She asked a girl to come out and have a look. The girl told her about the fighting. She sent out some fighters immediately. Getting this powerful help, Ox Devil King had the lead in a new round and took the opportunity to escape into the cave.
Monkey King, Pig Bajie and the nether-world fighters gathered in front of the cave and itched for a fight. Leaving no chance to explain, hot tempered Pig Bajie already broke the cave door into pieces with his rake. Facing this situation, Ox Devil King could hardly sit still in the cave and ran out to fight. Ox Devil King, Pig Bajie and Monkey King, these three were in a tangled fight again. Over a hundred rounds later, Ox Devil King gradually lost the field and was going to escape into the cave but was blocked by the nether-world fighters. “Where to go?” they cried. “We’re waiting for you.” Unable to enter the cave, Ox Devil King could do nothing but retreat. Going in hot pursuit, Pig Bajie struck him mercilessly. Hurriedly throwing down his weapon, Ox Devil King turned into a white swan and flew into the sky. Seeing this, Monkey King smilingly said to Pig Bajie, “The devil escaped!” Without knowing it, all of them looked in all directions. “In the sky!” Monkey King reminded. “That’s only a white swan!” said Bajie. “That’s the devil!” Monkey King said. “What can we do next?” asked the village god. “You two lead the nether-world fighters into the cave and destroy the devil’s den and cut off his route of retreat.” Monkey King said to Pig Bajie and the village god, “Let me play the changing game with him.”
Pig Bajie and the village god left, Monkey King hid his golden cudgel and turned into a large green bird which flew into the sky and then dived onto the back of the white swan and firmly hold its neck and eyes. Knowing this was Monkey King, the white swan transformed into a yellow eagle and then turned around to fight the green bird. Monkey King then turned from the green bird into a black phoenix and closely pursued the yellow eagle. Ox Devil King turned from the yellow eagle into a white cane giving out a loud cry and flying due south. Standing still on a rock, Monkey King turned himself from the black phoenix into a red one and gave out a clear cry.
As the king of birds, the red phoenix startled the white crane which didn’t dare to turn into any other birds at all. Ox Devil King had to change his tactics and turned himself from the white crane into a deer which ran down the hill and ate grass on the hillside. Immediately recognizing the true colors of the deer, Monkey King turned into a hungry tiger which was going to eat the deer. Falling into utter confusion, Ox Devil King turned into a leopard from the deer and was going to hurt the tiger. Monkey King turned into a Suanni which was going to eat the leopard. Ox Deveil King turned into a bear from the leopard. And Monkey King turned into an elephant which was going to twist around the bear with his snake-like trunk. Ox Devil King finally showed his true colors by turning into a white ox from the bear. The head of the ox was big as a mountain with eyes bright as lightening, horns high as two towers, and teeth sharp as knives. From head to tail, over ten thousand feet long, and from hoofs to back, eight thousand feet tall.
“You dirty monkey, what can you do to me?” Ox Devil King laughed at Monkey King. Showing his true colors and taking out his golden cudgel and bending over, Monkey King cried, “Grow!” Monkey King grew quickly. A hundred thousand feet tall, head big as Mt.Tai, eyes bright as the sun and moon, mouth large as a water pond and teeth large as doors.Monkey King fought the white ox mercilessly with his golden cudgel. And the ox could do nothing but head Monkey King with his horns. Fighting each other fiercely, neither the white ox nor the gigantic Monkey King realized that they were surrounded closely by a large number of gods coming from the heaven. But the white ox wasn’t afraid at all and continuously put up a last-ditch struggle against Monkey King. Without realizing, they came to the mouth of the Palm Cave. The white ox rolled over on the ground and showed its true colors and ran into the cave immediately. Monkey King and all the gods surrounded the whole mountain at once waiting for a chance to catch the demon.
Before long, Pig Bajie and the village god came together with the nether-world fighters. “What about the Moyun Cave?” asked Monkey King. “The concubine of the ox was killed by me,” laughed Pig Bajie. “She showed her true colors at once. It was surprising that she was a fox. Besides, others are all animals. I burnt the cave.” Pig Bajie added, “The village god told me that the ox has another home. So we came here to catch the ox and mop up the remnants of the enemy.” “Great!” cried Monkey King. “You have worked hard and achieved great successes! But I’m sorry to say that I didn’t defeat the ox. He has already entered the cave.” “Palm Cave?” asked Pig Bajie. “Yes,” replied Monkey King. “Iron Fan Princess is here.” “But why don’t you go in and ask her for the fan?” asked Pig Bajie. Without waiting for a chance to explain, Pig Bajie heavily struck the cave door with his rake. A girl ran into the cave and made a report immediately. Ox Devil King was very angry. He spat out the fan from his mouth and handed it over to Iron Fan Princess.
“Dear!” Iron Fan Princess took over the fan and said. “Give the fan to the monkey as soon as possible and ask him to withdraw from here.” “No!” cried Ox Devil King. The devil ran out and put up a last-ditch struggle. But this time, he was defeated very soon and asked the gods to spare his life. “Now that you ask us to spare your life,” one of the gods said, “you should give us the fan first.” “All right,” said the devil. Ox Devil King was pushed to the cave. “Darling,” the devil cried to Iron Fan Princess. “Take out the fan and save me!” Carrying the fan twenty feet long, Iron Fan Princess came out and knelt down. “Please spare our lives,” she implored the gods to forgive them. “I’m willing to give the fan to uncle Monkey King.” Taking over the fan, Monkey King, together with all the gods, went east to meet his master. “Congratulations!” the gods said to Tank Monk. “We come here to help you on orders from the father of Buddha.” “Thank you very much!” said Tang Monk.
All of them came to the Flame Mountain before long. Monkey King fanned the mountain and the fire was put out immediately. He fanned the second time, a wind was rising. Fanned the third time, a rain fell down from the sky. The gods took the ox devil and went away. They would give the ox to the father of Buddha for punishment. Escorting Iron Fan Princess, the village god saw them off. “Why don’t you go away?” Monkey King asked Iron Fan Princess. “Do me a favor,” kneeling down in front of Monkey King. “Return the fan to me, please!” “You contemptible wretch!” cursed Pig Bajie. “You really don’t know how to appreciate favor. We spared your life. That’s more than enough. But it’s surprising that you ask us to return the fan. You think we’ll sell the fan after crossing the Flame Mountain and use the money to buy food? Only after going through all kinds of hardships and difficulties did we get the fan. How can we return it to you? You’d better go now.” “Monkey King said that he would return the fan to me as soon as the fire was put out,” said Iron Fan Princess. “So long as you return the fan to me, I’m willing to repent and start anew.’ “Monkey King,” said the village god. “Now that she knows how to put out the fire once for all, you’d better return the fan to her. And then I can save the people here from fire.”
“A farmer told me that the fire was put out only for one year. After one year of harvest, the dying embers flared up again.” Asked Monkey King, “But how to exterminate the fire disaster?” “If you want to exterminate the fire, you should fan the fire forty-nine times. ” On her words, Monkey King fan the mountain forty-nine times without stopping. The fan was really a treasured object. The fire was extinguished immediately. Moreover, it rained cats and dogs. And strange enough, the rain was pouring down only on the mountain, but not a single drop of rain fell on where they stood. Giving the fan back to Iron Fan Princess, Monkey King said to her, “I’m afraid that if I don’t return the fan to you, people would consider me dishonest. This time I spare your life. Take the fan and go away. Never make troubles again.” “Thank you all!” said Iron Fan Princess. Taking over the fan and muttering something, the fan was reduced as small as an apricot leave. She put the little fan into her mouth and then did obeisance to everyone. Then, Tang Monk and his three disciples set out without any delay.
Undergoing innumerable trials, Tang Monk reached India at last and took 657 books of Buddhist ures to China in AD 645. Traveling over 130 then countries in 16 years, he got rich firsthand materials according to which he wrote a book west >>.
