According to wikipedia.com, a sunspot is a region on the Sun's surface that is marked by intense magnetic activity which inhibits convection, forming areas of reduced surface temperature. Its temperature is about 4000-5000 K, in contrast to 5800 K of any other areas of the Sun's surface. Sunspots reach their peak every 11 years.
This photo was take shortly before the sunset on January 1, 2007. Two sunspots are found on the upper left corner of the photo. They were not from the dusts on the camera sensor, since other photos taken when the Sun was not in the same position show the same pattern.
