哈金今年49岁，原名金雪飞，出生于一个中国军人家庭，14岁入伍，1978年，考入黑龙江大学外语系，后考入山东大学英美文学研究所，获硕士学位；1985年赴美，在马萨诸塞州的布兰岱斯大学深造，获英美文学博士学位。
自进入美国文坛后，哈金连续获奖。他的第一本小说集《好兵》(Ocean ofWord)就获得了笔会海明威奖，小说集《光天化日》(UndertheRedFlag)获得Flannery-O'Con-nor小说奖，《新郎》(TheBridegroom)获得了亚裔美国文学奖、The Townsend小说奖……1999年，他以长篇小说《等待》(Waiting)夺得第50届美国国家图书奖。

like a kite scrambling away from your hand

Still, I went on scouring the clouds
for a face that might blow the shimmer
of my brain into blazing lines.
With a seething heart wobbled through
the air, chasing a sublime haze.
