Life as a physician: intern year

Intern year is almost over, July to June, every year there are new physicians on board for training. In US a physician need to finish a residency after medical school in order to practice independently. The training for physicians are brutal, long hours and very hard work, also emotionally draining, unless you do not care. During inpatient month, you only get 4 days off each month, each day you have to go to hospital early to pre-round on all of your patients (now capped at 10 patients each intern), review all the labs, talk to all of the patients, and form a preliminary plan. Average you have to work 70-80hrs a week. There are hours limitation for the residents now, but you still have to finish all of your work before you leave.

The older generation of doctors are trained in the traditional way, which you stay in the hospital for 2-3 days, go home and come back the next day. They still think that is way of learning, and the functioning status of new generation of physicians are declining, which I do not totally agree. In China, all physicians had shift work after finishing med school and China still produce high quality doctors. So which way is better? I guess we have to wait and see.
