15-107 win over the Haw

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. Brandon Williams Ravens Jersey . -- It was one of the most spectacular plays of a dreary season for the Detroit Pistons: Andre Drummond knocked a pass away near midcourt, took off toward the basket and threw down an emphatic one-handed dunk while being fouled by Atlantas Elton Brand. "I knew I didnt have a chance," Brand said. Drummonds dunk propelled the Pistons to a 115-107 win over the Hawks on Friday night that snapped Detroits three-game losing streak and handed Atlanta its eighth straight loss. The Hawks shot 17 of 20 from the field during a 41-point second quarter, but the Pistons rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit. "We came together at halftime. We asked each other if we really want this," Drummond said. "We looked each other in the eyes as men and we all came together and decided we wanted to do this. So we came out firing." Atlanta was without guard Jeff Teague, who was out with a sprained ankle. Al Horford was lost for the season in December with a torn pectoral muscle. Paul Millsap had 23 points for the Hawks. "We had that huge second quarter, but they must have gotten a huge pep talk at halftime, because they really came out for the third with a lot of energy," Atlantas Kyle Korver said. Drummonds dunk on Brand gave the Pistons a 93-88 lead with 10:00 to play. Brand was a good sport about it, smiling a bit and even appearing to look up at the scoreboard for a replay. Drummond finished 10 of 11 from the field, but the Hawks finally started fouling him intentionally. The Detroit big man finished 0 for 8 on free throws, and the Pistons eventually took him out for the final 3:40. "Obviously, were trying to get back into the game, and it helped," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. "We didnt score every time that we tried it, but it gave us a chance. It also helps that hes a great young player and we got him off the floor for a couple minutes." It was tied at 104 when Detroits Kyle Singler made a 3-pointer from the right wing, and Will Bynum doubled the lead with a driving three-point play with 1:06 to go. A 3-pointer by Singler with 30 seconds left made it 113-106. Greg Monroe had 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Pistons, who stood pat at the trade deadline Thursday. Detroit is now 2 1/2 games behind Atlanta and Charlotte, who are in a virtual tie for seventh place in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks looked unstoppable on offence in the second quarter, scoring at will while going the entire period without a turnover. But the Pistons outscored Atlanta 34-20 in the third. It wasnt a perfect second half by any means for Detroit, but the Pistons did show some urgency. Brandon Jennings, who was having a poor shooting game for Detroit, was fouled twice while shooting 3-pointers. After Jennings missed badly from 3-point range, Josh Smith blocked Millsap at the other end, and Jennings was waiting behind the defence for a layup that gave the Pistons an 82-79 lead. "We made two or three hustle plays that winning teams make," Detroit interim coach John Loyer said. "Two and three bodies on the floor, couple guys going out of bounds. You guys all watch the NBA. The better teams do that." Jennings finished with 12 points and 14 assists, although he didnt play at all in the fourth. Detroit went with Bynum instead, and he finished with nine points and seven assists. "Brandon is a scorer. Brandon has been a great facilitator for us," Loyer said. "He started to attack in the third quarter and Will came in and finished it. Thats what teammates do." NOTES: Atlanta shot 85 per cent in the second quarter, one of the top marks for one quarter in the NBA this season. Denver shot 87 per cent (13 for 15) in the fourth quarter at Toronto on Dec. 1, according to STATS. ... The Pistons outscored the Hawks 66-34 in the paint. ... Kyle Korver was 2 for 4 from 3-point range, extending his NBA record to 123 consecutive games with a 3. Owen Daniels . Miller finished in two minutes, 6.09 seconds, one day before the first medal race on the Alpine schedule. The 36-year-old American also turned in the top time in Thursdays opening training session. C.J. Mosley . Collazo was proven correct as his final punch knocked out Victor Ortiz at 2:59 of the second round in a welterweight fight at the Barclays Center on Thursday night.SAN DIEGO -- Chase Headley took care of two opening-week frustrations with one swing. Headley hit a grand slam, his first hit of the season, to help carry the San Diego Padres to an 8-4 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday and avoid a four-game sweep. Clayton Richard and two relievers combined on a four-hitter and Andy Parrino had his first big league homer for the Padres. "We really didnt play how were capable of playing or how we wanted to play, but I think we averted disaster," Headley said. "If you lose the first four, you really put yourself behind the 8-ball. So its good to get that first win out of the way, and hopefully we can refocus and play better going forward." Headleys second career slam, off Scott Elbert in the eighth, ended his 0-for-12 slump to start the season. Headley also walked three times. He knew he was eventually going to get a hit. "I was starting to wonder, though," Headley said. "It happens two or three times a year, but when you start a season that way, youre just sitting there and its like, man, did I forget how to do this? It was nice to get the monkey off the back, and obviously, the same thing with getting the first win out of the way." Headleys slam came on an 0-1 slider. "I felt like I was seeing the ball a lot better today," he said. "All day I had better at-bats, letting the ball come to me. I finally got a pitch I could handle and put a good swing on it." Still, the Padres had their second three-error game of the series and have committed eight in four games. Richard made two errors, one on a routine throw to first and the other while covering the bag. Richards only other mistake in seven dominant innings was allowing Matt Kemps two-run homer to straightaway centre field with two outs in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Mark Ellis was aboard on a leadoff error by right fielder Will Venable. Kemp has two homers and eight RBIs after four games. Andre Ethier also hit a two-run homer, his first, off Ernesto Frieri in the ninth. Ethier has eight RBIs as well. Richard was making his first start since July 4. He had season-ending shoulder surgery on July 29. "It was fun. Winning baseball games is fun," Richard said. "We were able to do that today so well move forward with a smile on our faces" Richard (1-0) allowed just one other hit, struck out three and walked none. The two runs he allowed were unearned. Richard didnt allow a runner until his fielding error let Dee Gordon reach leading off the fourth, and didnt give up a hit until Juan Uribe singled to right in the fifth. Jacoby Jones Jersey. Richard said the key was throwing strikes early in the count. "You know the middle of their order is extremely talented, so you dont want to fall behind those guys," he said. The Padres, bedeviled in the first three games by errors, strikeouts and a lack of hitting, took their first lead of the season on Jesus Guzmans RBI single with one out in the first off former teammate Aaron Harang. It scored leadoff batter Cameron Maybin, who was hit by a pitch and stole second. Yonder Alonso followed with a sacrifice fly. The Padres added an unearned run in the third when Guzman reached on Uribes error at shortstop and eventually scored on John Bakers single. Parrino homered for a 4-0 lead in the fourth, an opposite-field shot for the switch-hitter that landed in the Padres bullpen beyond the fence in left-centre. Harang (0-1), who led his hometown Padres with 14 wins last year before signing with the Dodgers as a free agent, had a rough return to Petco Park. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 4 1-3 innings while walking five and striking out six. "There was a little anxiety being able to come here and pitch, but I always felt I was pitching just tense out there," Harang said. "When you do that, youre going to scuffle. And when you do stuff wrong and miss location and youre up and down in the zone, one thing led to another. I was pressing too much." NOTES: The Padres put RHP Dustin Moseley on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder, their second starter to be sidelined in less than a week. Moseley allowed five runs in a 6-5, 11-inning loss to the Dodgers on Saturday night. Tim Stauffer, who had been expected to start the season opener Thursday, was placed on the DL that day, retroactive to Wednesday, with a strained right elbow. ... The Padres filled Moseleys roster spot by recalling LHP Josh Spence from Triple-A Tucson. The Australian made his big league debut with the Padres last season. ... San Diego manager Bud Black said Anthony Bass will start either Thursday, which would have been Moseleys next start, or Saturday. ... Both teams are off Monday before resuming play Tuesday. The Dodgers play their home opener against Pittsburgh, with Clayton Kershaw scheduled to start against Kevin Correia. Kershaw started the season opener Thursday against the Padres but left after three innings with the flu. ' ' '
