MONTREAL -- As hot as veteran Ryan Smyth has been, he was quick to give goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin much of the credit for the streaking Edmonton Oilers latest victory. Chargers Jersey . Smyth had a goal and an assist but Khabibulin was the difference as the Oilers downed the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 despite being outshot 29-14 on Tuesday night. "Great goaltending gave us a chance," said Smyth, who has nine points in his last five games. "Habbys been playing superb all year. "In the third they had some chances but we found a way to hold on. It was a good road win." Ryan Jones scored short handed and Tom Gilbert got the game-winner for the Northwest Division-leading Oilers (9-3-2), who rebounded from a 4-2 loss to Phoenix on Saturday to post their seventh win in eight games. They have surrendered one or fewer goals in seven of their 14 games and Khabibulin has dominated the leagues goaltending statistics since the start of the season. "I wouldnt say all season long because it hasnt been long yet, but I felt pretty good," the 38-year-old said. "I think were all playing well, so that helps." Max Pacioretty scored for the Canadiens (5-7-2), who have lost two in a row and have scored one or fewer goals in six of their defeats. Paciorettys team-leading sixth of the season came 22 seconds after Gilbert put Edmonton ahead 2-0 at 16:28 of the third period. The big winger swept in on the right side and saw his backhander go off Gilberts stick, change speed and fool Khabibulin between the pads. That brought the Bell Centre crowd of 21,273 to life after seeing the home team checked tightly by the speedy Oilers and thwarted time and again by the big Russian goaltender. But Smyth ended the threat with an empty-net goal with 43 seconds to play. "We had a lot of opportunities to score, but Khabibulin played well and we werent able to cash in on a lot of really good opportunities," said Erik Cole, who was Montreals best forward on the night with five shots on goal and a strong physical effort throughout the game. "It could have been a much different games if we could have cashed in on a couple." Montreal coach Jacques Martin felt his team played well enough to win, generating 17 scoring chances, but fell victim to a hot goalie and some bad luck. Michael Cammalleri hit two goalposts, while Edmonton had Gilberts harmless looking shot go in off defenceman Josh Gorges. "They have the best goals-against in the league," Martin said of the Oilers. "Theyre a good team with a lot of speed and talent, but we dominated them in scoring chances. Youre disappointed with the score, but it wasnt a lack of effort or execution." A key was special teams, as aggressive Edmonton penalty killing left the Canadiens 0-for-6 on the night and also produced the games first goal. Jones picked off a Tomas Plekanec pass at the Montreal blue-line and went in alone to put a deke on Carey Price and slide in his third of the season short handed 4:38 into the second frame. Smyths goal was his fifth in five games and gave him the team lead with seven, one more than rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. "Its just nice to chip in offensively and feel a part of it," said Smyth. "Ive said this many times, being around young kids really pushes you and with the experience Ive gained over the years I want to push them too. "Its a two-way street and its been going good. Its just a matter of putting up wins now." Edmontons marquee line of No. 1 draft picks Taylor Hall and Nugent-Hopkins with Jordan Eberle were matched against Montreals top defence pair and a strong defensive line and had few scoring chances, but neither did they give Plekanecs line much room. The Canadiens move on for road games in Phoenix and Nashville this week, while the Oilers continue a six-game trip to three more Original Six cities in Boston, Detroit and Chicago. Notes -- Andrei Kostitsyn sat out for Montreal with a lower-body injury. Yannick Weber moved up to play forward and Alexei Emelin returned to the lineup. . . The Oilers had Ales Hemsky and Cam Barker back from shoulder injuries, bumping Colten Teubert and Magnus Paajarvi to the pressbox. Hemsky saw 17:08 of ice time and picked up an assist. Jacoby Jones Jersey . It also extends the teams home winless skid to six. Their last win at MTS Centre was November 15 over Philadelphia. The Jets will play seven of the next 10 on the road, starting with a two-game trip -- Monday in Columbus and Tuesday in Buffalo (both games on TSN Jets, TSN Radio 1290). Craig Mager Jersey . One would think that winning one of the NHLs signature events – with 50,000 fans watching in the stadium and a larger-than-normal television audience – could propel this team onto a much-needed winning streak.MILWAUKEE -- Kyle Lohse pumped his right first waiting in the on-deck circle as Jean Seguras three-run homer cleared the left-field fence in the second inning. It sure felt good for Milwaukees veteran right-hander to get some early run support in Miller Park from a lineup off to a middling start at the plate at home. Lohse allowed five hits and no walks in seven innings, Khris Davis added a solo shot in the fourth and the Brewers improved to a big league-best 16-6 with a 5-2 win Wednesday night over the San Diego Padres. "You get some runs on the board, it is big for us to go out and shut down the next inning to keep the other team down and keep the momentum going," Lohse said. Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save, his 313th over 12 full big league seasons. Brewers batters backed up another good outing by the pitching staff with nine hits at home, where the team had been averaging just two runs and six hits entering the night. After four straight one-run games, going 3-1, the Brewers got a relative breather. "Its always nice coming in to the last inning with Frankie coming out there and he doesnt have to be perfect," manager Ron Roenicke said. "If youre two runs up with your closer coming in you feel really good about a ball game." Roenicke said before the game it was only a matter of time before his squad broke out of its hitting slump at home -- and his players backed him up with four runs and five hits in the first two innings. Tyson Ross (2-3) allowed a season-high five earned runs in six innings, regressing after striking out nine and shutting out the Giants over eight innings in his previous start last week. He had little to celebrate Wednesday, a day after he turned 27. Milwaukee was aggressive from the outset and made solid contact early in counts. Ryan Braun doubled home a run in the first on a 1-1 pitch, the same count on which eighth-place hitter Segura hit a 385-foot homer off the green facade over the left-field wall. "He just couldnt get ahead of hitters aand put them away," Padres manager Bud Black said of Ross. Corey Liuget Chargers Jersey. . "They jumped out on some balls that were out of over the plate. The big blow was the home run." Getting the 24-year-old Segura going will help whats already a potent Brewers lineup. Segura, who was dropped from second to eighth in the order after starting the season hitting .232, hit his first homer since July 30, spanning 269 plate appearances. Segura said being dropped in the order was tough, but he feels hes making progress with the bat. Still, the Brewers are 10 games over .500 even with Segura still finding his way. "Were doing some great things on the field, pitching, bullpen," Segura said. "Were going in the right direction." San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the first off of Seth Smiths sacrifice fly, but was otherwise limited until pinch-hitter Nick Hundleys RBI single with two outs in the seventh. Lohse, in his 14th season in the majors, was changing speeds and mixing his curve effectively with a slider and fastball. "He used both sides of the plate extremely well. It was a veteran pitcher making pitches," Black said. "It was really Pitching 101." NOTES: A fan sitting in the front row next to the Brewers dugout left with an ice pack on her right wrist after apparently being hit by a bat that flew out of the hands of Padres pinch-hitter Yasmani Grandal in the seventh on a strikeout. ... Black said RHP Josh Johnson is scheduled for elbow ligament-replacement surgery for the second time in his career and will miss the entire season. Johnson was placed on the DL before the season began. ... Brewers RHP Brandon Kintzler (rotator cuff) had a 40-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and appears on track to return from the DL on Friday. The setup man has been sidelined since April 9. ... The Padres will start LHP Eric Stults (1-2) when they begin a three-game series in Washington on Thursday. ... The Brewers are off Thursday and plan to start RHP Matt Garza (0-2) at home against the Cubs on Friday. NFL Jerseys Cheap China Jerseys Cheap Wholesale NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys Jerseys NFL Cheap ' ' '
