Making History: Bicontinental Chess Match to be Played at the Strait of Magellan and Chilean Antarctica Territory

This historic 4-Games Match between two young players, GM Hou Yifan (China) and IM Cristobal Henriquez (Chile) will be held in two Continents, the American Continent and the Antarctica Continent. It will be the first World Chess Federation “FIDE” rated game played in the White Continent. Three games will be played in the city of Punta Arenas, which is the capital of the Chilean Patagonia and one game is to be played in Antarctica, Earth’s southernmost continent and the fifth-largest continent in area after, Africa, Asia, North America and South America. The event is sponsored by the Government of Chile, the Municipality of Punta Arenas and the games are sanctioned by the World Chess Federation “FIDE”. An Inaugural Opening Ceremony took place at the Plaza de la Constitucion located in front of “Palacio de La Moneda," in Santiago, Chile. Following the ceremony, both Masters played a simultaneous exhibitions. This event was designed to promote chess in Chile and to setup the record of playing the first FIDE rated game in Antartica.
