On Sunday, Donald Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson appeared on MSNBC to defend her candidate’s most recent racist comments, and though she fought mightily against the patent content of his statements, host Joy Reid and guest Lawrence O’Donnell refused to allow her to get away with obfuscating the obvious.
Pierson began by claiming that Trump didn’t criticize Judge Gonzalo Curiel because solely because he was Mexican, and had mentioned specific rulings made by the judge that earned him the candidate’s ire. It’s the media’s fault, she said, that Trump keeps appearing to be a racist. Reid, however, was having none of it.
“The reason the media constantly talks about Donald Trump and his issues with Americans who are non-white is because he keeps bringing it up,” she said. “Nobody asked him about the judge’s background, or the judge’s ethnicity.”
“He brought it up on his own, and when he was asked if that would also apply to Muslims, he — on his own, without being prompted said — ‘Yeah, actually that’s a problem.’ He’s bringing these things up.”
