In 2016, The Atlantic’s editorial board — for the third time in its 159-year history — is endorsing a presidential candidate, and much like in 1964, this endorsement is primarily focused on counteracting the dangers posed by the opponent.
“We are impressed by many of the qualities of the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, even as we are exasperated by others,” the editorial board said, “but we are mainly concerned with the Republican Party’s nominee, Donald J. Trump, who might be the most ostentatiously unqualified major-party candidate in the 277-year history of the American presidency.”
