The Evil of Apple

The Evil of Apple

Liang, Shenqin

Apple is a great company because it has provided the public with some good products. However, it might also be evil, especially in recent years: they deliberately design some parts of their products in certain ways just in order to make much more easy money, which, I think, they do not deserve and should not earn. I will use this post to list Apple's evils that I want to point out.

On Soldered SSDs

In recent years, the SSDs of apple computers are all soldered onboard. This means that the general users cannot replace them when the SSDs degrade perhaps as soon as in a couple of years. Then, many customers would have to buy new computers, though the old Apple computers are totally fine except for the SSDs. If Apple is not evil and really wants to make a contribution to improving the Earth's environment, it should make the SSDs replaceable by the general users. Also, Apple should enable other companies to produce compatible SSDs. However, it is very clear Apple just wants to make tons of easy money from controlling SSDs. I feel in some sense Apple is just robbing money from the people with its products. Apple actually has a monopoly on SSDs (and also RAMs) for their computers. A good government should investigate such a monopoly. I feel Apple is too strong and has too much influence on the customers and it uses its huge influence to make too much easy money. As a basic principle of fairness, one should never make too much easy money. Perhaps the government should consider splitting it for the commonwealth of the people.

I do not have to use Apple computers. So, I have decided not to purchase any new Apple computers till the day when they produce computers with replaceable SSDs. If there are many users like me, I think Apple would have to do some necessary adjustment. For some windows computers, especially some made by Microsoft, it is also difficult to replace their SSDs. So, I will also not buy them.

On iPhone's Batteries

Today, I checked by chance the battery health of my iPhone 12 pro, which has been used for just about one year. It showed that the maximum capacity was only 87%. I was a little shocked. My previous cellphone is the iPhone 7, whose battery capacity reached 87% in several years, perhaps in three years. Apple is really great! They make their CPUs much faster, and at the same time, they also make their iPhone batteries degrade even faster. Do they do it on purpose? I do not know. If they do it on purpose, I have to say Apple is really evil.
