[i get to learn a little about Jung when i read his introduction on a newer version of I Ching, or Yi Jing. he seems to have something to say about the inexplicable phenonmenon in Chinese thoughts. he does not just dwell on the "mind," but heart. can wisdom come from the heart? well, maybe we'll never have all the satisfatory answers to everything....

I like Jung's words LTG posted. I don't like Freud's libido theory neither, which confused me a lot.
I think libido is definitely Not the Sole unconscious motivation of a person's thoughts and behaviors.
Thanks a lot.

Indeed soul and mind are different "things". Mind is the by-product of the brain. Modern psychiatry only studies the "mind". Modern psychology positions themselve as a humble servant to the modern psychiatry, i.e, the psychologists are willingly play assistant roles. Modern treatment for mental illness is dominated by medications that alter brain neurotransmitters.:) Most psychiatrists treat their mentally illed patients the same way as they treat the physically illed patients. The same model as a mechanic fix the broken cars, no need of philosophical undersanding of the life, no need to be artistic, even no need to feel their heart..:))
Why today's psychiatry is so different from the Freud and Jung's days? I guess it has a lot to do with commecial interests. These days, practicing medicine is like doing business, doctors are like saleman. Big pharmapeutical companies are very powerful..:)
//
Jung was Freud's favorate student, but later, Jung split from Freud because he didn't agree with Freud who regarded libido is the sole unconscious motivation of a person's thought and behaviors. Feeling ashame to say that I didn't read much of both Freud and Jung. If I have time, I will read Jung. I don't like old Freud much..:)))
//
The field studing "soul" ia called parapsychology. Not much funding source..Standford University had an institution that had been studying this..
I agree with you that soul is independent of our existence..Wondering how did you figured this out??! I believed that the origin of "soul" is like an ocean. The soul reside in us is like a drop of water, after we die, the drop of water will return to the ocean. A drop of water can communicate with the ocean because fundmentally we are part of the the Ocean!
xixi...Only my lousy personal opinion.:))

True, I love Jung’s philosophy, even his interpreting of Religious belief. I am a Christian, but hate to abide by rules set by Church. In Jung, I find that we even have some common ground. His biography, Dreams, Memory, and Reflections, which is a journey of inner world - - - to me, more real than the outer world.
Your “soul has always been there long before we were born!!!! “is interesting too : ) Somehow, it still reminds me of the book I mentioned earlier. in the book, soul is said to be attached to us when we are born and leave us when we die; like light. I guess that’s why we say the light of life. The attaching and detaching of soul makes a body more than a body. For example, some people born with certain talents, sometimes we say, DNA makes difference, but sometimes ordinary parents still can have prodigy.
I remember in that book, once soul asked the Master of soul, what’s the purpose for incarnation? Master says, ‘experience life for perfection”.
When I say soul physically exists, I mean, “soul” can be measured through scientific means, for example, people who pass away always lose certain once of weight. Intangible but exists ; ) - - - but I doubt if the lost weight is that of Soul. : )
I am neither a psychologist nor a scientist. When I think of soul, it’s the restless force in us that pushes us in search for the meaning of life. That’s why I say art, music, literature, and etc, are by-products from the journey of searching : )

hi rc & yy,
very enjoy reading your posts!!!!
thought provoking!!!!
i am not sure what the comtemporary psychologists are up to these days, but when i read Jung, he strikes me not only as a psychologist, but also a philosopher who combines both eastern and western ideas and knowledge into his own understanding of human life/mind, etc....
when we talk/think aloud about the "soul," we are talk about the non-physical worlds where a few "scientists" have left their foot-prints :)

Interesting : )
I always think dream is another reality - - - inner reality (in Jung’s words, if I remember it well). It has healing power like mystery, since it’s freely flowing, bringing the hidden feelings or thoughts about the physical reality. I guess that surrealism in writing or painting is sort of based on that - - - freedom of mind. To me, words same as art, or even drawings in those prehistoric caves, embody meanings which we can call thoughts.
Where does the Soul reside then? : ) one of interesting books I read a while ago is Many Life, Many Masters by a psychiatrist. He can help a patient to see his/her history of incarnation through hypnosis. When a person dies, his soul/spirit leaves him/her to somewhere where Master of soul resides for another call for rebirth. - - - I doubt it, but I do believe soul is not a spiritual invention, but physically exists which grows too
我思故我在. When I don’t think, I still physically exist in other’s eyes. Hard to answer each question, I’d like to read more and share with both of you later : )
I love this kind of chatting, which proves我思故我在. Haha …

I believe "reality" is created by a "thought" or collective
"thoughts"; Thoughts are influenced by feelings; "dream" is a organized or disorganized mixture of feelings and thoughts; "word" is a materialized limited expression of thoughts and feelings..:)
I don't know when a thought is not a reality, I don't know when a word doesn't carry the meanings, I don't know when a dream can't reflect a truth.I don't know when one transcends his thoughts, words and dreams, is he/she still exist in reality? ..:)
"我思故我在", right?

Hey, LTG and YY:
Are you both looking into psychology? Carl Jung and Eric Fromm....Hmm.:))
Brain might be the organ that produce "mind", but I don't believe it is where our "soul" reside. "The Heart's Code" is an interesting book to read. It talks about what was found in heart transplant patients..

Wow, mind’s Rock & Roll!!! A circle of thought-provoking questions!!!
I would say that we are inherited with questions about our existence, such as who we are, what we are, and what the purpose of life is, and etc. No prefect answers for them, but we are led into a journey of soul-searching, which on the other hand has piled up a rich heritage of culture, art, literature, philosophy, psychology, science, and etc, on the riverbed of time… we are in a circle, but expanding it as we search and know more ….
Your Bleeding Iris touches me with its genuine emotions and feeling and also its wisdom about love and life, which I will say is a “see-through” or “see-beyond” and reminds me of Eric Fromm. He says in his Art of Being, that “we has concluded that the full humanization of man requires the breakthrough from the possession-centered to the activity-centered orientation, from selfishness and egotism to solidarity and altruism”

is a "word" a "thought"??
is a "thought" "reality"???
is "reality" the leftover of a "dream"????
is a "dream" a heart's trespassing into another?????

yes, aesthetics of the inner beauty!!!;)
One interesting thing I find in myself is that I start to love the word, “landscape”, which even brings something from invisible to tangible.:)

Another true. I guess people always associate Poetry to Beauty. But Beauty is hard to define, such as a palace could be magnificent, but a desert can be amazing. In my humble opinion, a poet should not think about the “Trend of Poetry” but he/she sticks to Truth - - - for sure, poetry has nothing to do with fashion business : )

the dreamworld is more "real" sometimes than the "realworld"....
poetry should not be "shoe polishing," in my humble opinion, but a knife that cuts through the dumb skin of the daily hustling and bustling....

True. That’s why I love your poems inspired from dreams, which are like retreating into and rediscovering Self . . .

western approaches to human mind is theoratically insightful and medically helpful, emotionally manageble.....
here, poetry can fill some of the empty space between layers of human un/consciouness.....
