走出非洲--Out of Africa

Out of Africa/>

The first time I watched the movie when I was in college, I learned something from it. Freedom may be more important than marriage for some people. Marriage is just a piece of paper and it doesn't necessarily make the other love you more!  I knew there is more in this great movie and this morning I thought that it's time for me to watch it again.

I was impressed by the performance of Meryl Streep in the movie in which she was a wealthy lady Tanne who married with a man who did not love her at all and who only treated her as a friend. But he brought her to Kenya/>,Africa/>. He even did not want to stay at home, so he bought a farm and turned it into a coffer plant so that she could spend time on it. She was very disappointed but she quickly started to love this land and the simple African people. Later, her husband even got her the disease syphilis (梅毒) and she won't be able to have a child.

Fortunately she found her true love Denys in Africa. Denys saved her  during her encounter with a lion. Then they had dinner together with their friend Berkeley. He was attracted by her amazing talent of telling story. She could let others start with a sentence and then tell a fantastic story following it. So, Denys started with "There was a wandering Chinese   living in Limehouse...and a girl named Shirley.Who spoke perfect Chinese...". ( I don't know why he started with Chinese, or  he thought Chineses are good lovers? :) Then, she told a very engaging tale. Denys was so attracted and wondered that whether she really travelled to those places. She said that she was a mental traveller and a mentral traveller hadn't the need to eat or sleep.  Denys shew her all the natural beautifulness of Africa, they went on safari together, hunted together, fought the lions together, shared the blue sky in the nights of Africa/>, flew over the beautiful African plain together. They understood each other and they were soul mate. The only thing that they didn't agree was that she wanted to marry him and he didn't like marriage. A woman wanted to own something to care about, like the farm, so she wanted to have him as her husband. But Denys wanted more freedom. He thought a marriage would kill his freedom and passion for life and love. So, he kept leaving and coming back.

Finally a fire burned her farm and she was broke. She had to give up the farm. Then, she remembered something Denys said before. He said, " you can't own it. It's their land. ". But then, he came back. Here is what he said.
--I was beginning to like your things.  And I was beginning to like living without them.  You've ruined it for me, you know.
--Ruined what?
--Being alone
--Have I?
--I'd like to come with you to Mombasa/>/>. Can I fly you there?
--Aren't you going away again?
--I have some things to do tomorrowat Tsavo, but I'll be back on Friday. Will that be all right?
--Of course.

Unfortunately his plane crashed and he was killed.
In the funneral, she saw an image from a native who used to accompany Denys. The native is from a tribe called Masai. Denys once told her that Masai could not be tamed and if you put them in prison , they die!

Why are some people afraid of marriage? Because they love freedom, if marriage is prison, then they die!
But, when you meet the one, who is your soulmate, who is able to help you to achive more freedom and passion, then you should go ahead and fall in love and get married :) . If you are able to ruin "being alone" for the other, then congratulations !

That's what I learned from this movie. It's a great movie with wonderful scenes of Africa landscape and music.
