The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 9,742.20, down 47.16. The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed at 1,061.61, down 2.37. The Nasdaq composite index closed at 2,124.04, down 6.70.
Falling stocks outpaced gainers on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume came to 1.2 billion shares compared with 979 million Monday, when trading was light because of the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur.
