Keeping your computer safe:

·         Make sure Windows Update is turned on and set to receive and install Microsoft patches for Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office products

·         Make sure there is an antivirus program loaded and running on your computer

·         Make sure that the antivirus program is automatically downloading the signature files from antivirus vendor’s web site and installing the signature files

·         Check and find out if your antivirus program will catch spyware and malware, if not, install an anti-spyware, or anti-malware program

·         Make sure you have a software and/or hardware firewall installed

·         Be careful of installing peer-sharing software (e.g. Morpheus, e-Donkey, etc.) because they can provide an entry into your computer

·         Make sure that all of your critical data (e.g. pictures, movies, documents, tax information, etc.) is backed up on CD, DVD, or an external hard disk drive

Safe usage:

·         Do not open e-mail attachments from people that you do not know or are not expecting attachments from — be particularly vigilant of password protected zip files

·         If kids are using your computer, put it in a high traffic area so the screen is visible

·         Talk to family members about possible threats on the Internet (e.g. identity theft, predatory individuals) and make sure that everyone knows steps to prevent them from happening
