新概念英语

李江和胡晓军早上六点爬起来读英语,校门口的大操场上已经很热闹了。

一个足球场被分成两半,有好些人在踢半场的小足球,人数不限,这样玩的人可以多一点,而且也不是很累,完了还要上一天的课呢。球场周边的跑道上,更有三三两两的同学结伴跑步。操场对面的大草坪上,星罗棋布地散着不少人,有的踱着方步,有的盘腿打坐,一人拿一本书,念念有词,正专心致志地读着英语。

“我就在这吧。” 胡晓军停在草坪边上的一棵树下,
“那我到前面去了。我们7点一起回去好吗?” 李江看好了前面的一块空地,
“好。” 胡晓军答应完,翻开了他的《新概念英语》第二册 “实践与进步(Practice and Progress)”,小声地念了起来。

“Last week… I went to the theatre… I had a very good seat… The play was very interesting… I did not enjoy it…... Last week I went to the theatre… I had a very good seat… The play was very interesting… I did not enjoy it…... A young man and a young woman were sitting behind me… They were talking loudly……”

《灵格风》的标准牛津音已经过时了,《九百句》太过口语化,也没什么内容,而《新概念》却一枝独秀。它一套四册,从很简单的第一册《First Things First》,到相当高深的第四册《Fluency in English》,每个人都能找到适合自己程度的课文。内容也非常有趣,有很多幽默故事,大家都喜欢读。最重要的是,《新概念》教的是通俗的平民化的美国英语,符合当时的潮流。准备 “插洋队” 的学子们个个磨拳擦掌,蠢蠢欲动,自然而然地成了热门中的热门。

同其它科目相比,录取的考生中英语程度相差很大,因为刚恢复高考的那几年,英语只作参考,是不计入总成绩的。于是乎,从刚能认全26个字母的,到能听懂美国之音《特殊英语(Special English)》节目的,什么水平都有。《新概念》正好从易到难,于是成了大学里四个不同级别的英语班通用教材。

前面空地上的李江,读的是《新概念英语》的第三册 “发展技巧(Developing Skills)”,和胡晓军的小声嘟囔不一样,李江是来回踱着方步,大声地念:

“Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously…... The hunt of the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw a large cat only five yards away from her…… The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.”

读完一边,李江合上书,继续踱着步,开始背诵,依然很大声:

“Pumas are large, cat-like animals…… which are found in THE America...... When reports came into THE London Zoo…… that a wild puma HAVE been spotted forty-five miles south of THE London zoo…… they ARE not taken seriously……”

再打开书对一下:“哦,America和London前面都不用加 ‘THE’。这里是过去完成时,应该用 ‘had’,而不是‘have’,后面也要用过去时。” 又合上书继续背:

“Pumas are large, cat-like animals…… which are found in America...... When reports came into London Zoo...... that a wild puma HAD been spotted...... forty-five miles south of London...... they WERE not taken seriously…...”

李江背完第一课 “A Puma at Large”,看了一下表,该回去吃早饭了。他走到胡晓军身边:“怎么样?我们回去吧。”
“嗯。” 胡晓军合上书,和李江并肩往回走。
“你读第几课?”
“第一课。”
“是不是‘A Private Conversation’?”
“是的。”
“那个故事蛮好玩的,那一对青年男女还以为别人在偷听他们说话呢。”
……
“李江,我问你一个问题:为什么课文里theatre的前面要加the?”
“加定冠词the是为了要指定某一家剧场吧。”
“可他并没有指定是哪一家剧场啊。为什么不用不定冠词a呢?”
“这个我也说不上来。回头记着问问老师吧。”

回到寝室,梁凡和黄河正好要去食堂买肉包子,于是四人拿起饭碗,一起去第三食堂。李江想起了刚才胡晓军的问题:
“黄河、梁凡,你们知不知道为什么theatre的前面要加THE?”
“我的英语差劲得很。梁凡,你怎么样?”
“还可以吧。其实这没什么道理的,就是语言习惯。”
“梁凡,你到底知不知道?可别拿什么 ‘语言习惯’ 来唬弄我们啊。”
“我没工夫唬弄你。美国人在hospital前面要加the,英国人就不加,你说为什么?”
……
黄河突然想起了什么:“梁凡,那你说我们的英语老师是按美国人的习惯打分呢,还是按英国人的习惯打分?”
“哪还用说,一定是按中国人的习惯打分。”
“什么是中国人的习惯啊?” 胡晓军扶了一下眼镜,
“中国人的习惯就是 ‘说你对,不对也对;说你不对,对也不对。’ ” 这次黄河抢在了梁凡的前头。
