He said aloud. I went out too far.” 联想到近日盛议的Amy Chun的教育方式,真希望她不是“went out too far”,也希望自己在孩子的教育乃至生活中,不要“went out too far”。
“The old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck. The brown blotches of the benevolent skin cancer the sun brings from its reflection on the tropic sea were on his cheeks. The blotches ran well down the sides of his face and his hand and the deep-creased scars from handling heavy fish on the cords. But none of these scars were fresh. They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert. Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.”
“I wish I had the boy. To help me and to see this. No one should be alone in their old age, he thought. But it is unavoidable.”
With his prayers said, and feeling much better, but suffering exactly as much, and perhaps a little more.”
…man is not made for defeat, he said. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” 可他依然坚定不移地说:“Fight them, he said. I’ll fight them until I die.”
“The wind is our friend, anyway, he thought. Then he added, sometimes. And the great sea with our friends and our enemies. And bed, he thought. Bed is my friend. Just bed, he thought. Bed will be a great thing.”
“…he dreamed of Africa when he was a boy and the long golden beaches and the white beaches, so white they hurt your eyes, and the high capes and the great brown mountains. He lived along that coast now every night and in his dreams he heard the surf roar and saw the native boats come biding through it. He smelled the tar and oakum of the deck as he slept and he smelled the smell of Africa that the land breeze brought at morning.”
决心跟随老人: “Now we fish togetheragain.” “No. I am not lucky. I am not lucky anymore.” “The hell with luck,” the boy said. “I’ll bring the luck with me.” “What will your family say?” “I do not care. I caught two yesterday. But we will fish together now or I still have much to learn.”......
书的末尾,在孩子的照顾下,老人睡着了,“…and the boy was sitting by him watching him.”
