Hunting down the perfect shearling boots

What a year shearling has had. And I do mean the whole year. While once it appeared only when the temperature had plummeted to the low single digits, last summer shearling-lined sandals by the likes of Birkenstock and Alexander McQueen proved that our sheepish friend can now be called upon an all year round. Like Frozen’s snowman Olaf who dreams of hanging out in hotter climes – ‘imagine how much cooler I’d be in summer!’ – shearling has finally got to see the sunny side of life.

Things have moved on a lot for the woolly boot since the height of the Ugg. Hey, Ugg has moved on a lot since the height of the Ugg, realising that to keep its profits from seasonal spikes, it had to share its warm fuzzy love across the whole year.

In fact, with Gucci providing the hit shoe of AW15 with its goat-hair-lined loafer, serious fashion types are finding it hard to slip into a shoe that isn’t cushioned with some kind of comfy natural animal by-product.

But for those traditionalists who prefer to dress seasonally, here we are at last in the months in which you can legitimately join the fuzzy fan club. And there is much variety beyond the traditional calf-height Ugg.

I am currently using any excuse to pop to the shops wearing my Mou sneakers – an ankle-height, suede pair with a chunky sole that are basically dressed-up bedroom slippers. Mine are plain grey, but I also love the embroidered version below.

Converse’s shearling hi-tops are tempting, too, as are the Montelliana après-ski boots at Matches Fashion. There has to be some joy to be had out of January, so why not a snuggly boot?

The only thing that may be a problem is taking them off come spring. But then, who’s saying you have to any more?
