2015.3.11
-学生对项目或实验有多理解;
-学生创造性怎样,他们如何应对产生的问题;
-这个工作是学生自己做的吗?预料(expected and desirable)他们得到了专家的帮助(assistance),但他们对项目要最终(ultimately)负责;

America's system is an honest system. Sometimes there might be unfairness, but general speaking, the judges have high moral spirit and are in very good quality. As you know, science fair awards are based on subjective evaluation, just like gymnastic or diving competition in Olympiad. It is very hard to be perfectly fair and objective, even if the organizers and judges try their best. I suggest you and your daughter to move on unless you have solid evidence to demonstrate that the third team purposely mark down your daughter's work. There are many upcoming opportunities in USA. I don't think the unfairness will happen again and again on the same person. I just talked with a father whose daughter got semi-finalist award in recent Intel STS. He is very modest saying that his daughter is just lucky this time, but he also mentioned that she did well in the past but was not lucky at those occasions. My interpretation on this is: the winners are outstanding for sure, but there are some students who deserve the award but not lucky. However, every dog has his day. A gold will shine sooner or later. So be relax, and be prepared for next chance. Wish your daughter shine up next time. Good luck to her.
