Even Boris Pasternak, the author of Doctor Zhivago, would have struggled to do justice to the life of Lisa Kishkin. She lived for 101 years in which time she was relentlessly buffeted by the tides of 20th-century history and the communist revolutions that convulsed both Russia and China.

A Russian of aristocratic birth who married a leading Chinese communist, she survived famine, revolutions, wars, her husbands incarceration during Stalins Great Terror, public shaming during Mao Zedongs cultural revolution, eight desperate years of solitary confinement, internal exile and rehabilitation. In the end, she died not in some violent cataclysm but peacefully in a Beijing hospital bed a largely forgotten figure but one revered by those who knew her.

Elizabetha Pavlovna Kishkin was born inthe Volga region of Russia in 1914, the daughter of a nobleman who was stripped of his land in the Russian revolution of 1917. Arrested the following year, her father killed himself with a cyanide pill in the horse carriage taking him to prison.
